Strawberry Tarts Raise a Few Smiles...

July is both the height of British summer and THE month for British grown strawberries. Big, fat, juicy, red strwaberries. Doesn't that want to make you go "Mmmmmm" ?

I made a stack of these tonight using standard sized muffin moulds and small mini muffin moulds. As only a mad woman would, I then went knocking on neighbours doors giving away strawberry tarts. There were a few sharp intakes of breath on sight of the whopping enormous strawberries. No one said no ! I also met the lady who lives RIGHT next door. We've only lived side by side for 5 years and never got round to saying hello. Turns out Sue is a keep baker and crafter.... so perhaps we might see her pop in on here. I'm sure she'd love some of the super crafty blogs with Ann and Jill's projects amongst others.

This one looks tiny, but it's inside a massive American sized jumbo muffin paper case. The strawberry was approx 2.1/2" diameter.

There is no recipe here - it's so easy absolutely no skill is required !

If you want to jazz it up a little, do make your own homemade shortcrust pastry. That does make a big difference and is well worth taknig the time to do. However, if all you want is a quick fix - there is nothing wrong with a packet of shop bought pastry.

Roll the pastry out and cut out circles to fit your silicone muffin tray. We've got some really cute new ones in stock now in pale pink and blue as you can see above. If you have one, a pastry tamper will make this even easier and faster still !

After lining with pastry, prick the bases with a fork. If you have time, pop the whole tray in the freezer for a couple of hours. This stops the pastry rising in the middle when you bake it and does away with the need for baking blind.

I've forgotten how long I cooked these for - but it was at 200deg C. They do shrink a bit. You'll see the edges of mine are really rustic looking. I didn't bother trimming them up. For something that's meant to be a quick fix - that takes too long !

After that, let them cool. Fill each with a good spoonful of whipped double cream - sweetend slightly with some icing sugar.

Pop a strawberry on top and drizzle generously with Askey's Strawberry Syrup Ice Cream Topping - available from pretty much all supermarkets. All done.

The little mini ones are pictured below. Feast your eyes.....

  2. These strawberry tarts are adorable. I've been eating lots of strawberries recently, never enjoyed them more. And this is a great idea for them.

Nice way to meet neighbors too, that was so cool of you.
